James D. Stern is a producer, director, and the founder of the independent production company Endgame Entertainment. Stern also worked on Broadway for a spell, producing such mammoth hits as "The Producers" and "Hairspray." In a far more spare capacity as a director, Stern has made a handful of films, among them the gun-centric 1999 drama "All the Rage," a film which swept awards a the Milan Film Festival and starred Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, and Robert Forster, the 2000 IMAX short "Michael Jordan to the Max," and the 2008 documentary "Every Little Step." Stern formed Endgame in 2002, and since then, its catalog has consisted of frequently innovative projects that otherwise resist categorization. In 2004, Endgame produced the wacky comedy "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," and in 2005, they partnered with Miramax to make the drama "Proof," with Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow, but also the internationally-produced action adventure "Beowulf & Grendel," which was shot in Iceland. Toward the end of the decade, Stern and Endgame ratcheted up their quality, particularly with the award-winning, Bob Dylan-centric alterna-biopic, "I'm Not There.," in 2007, and "An Education," the 2009 Anglo-American runaway hit which received multiple Oscar nominations. In 2011, Endgame partnered with two other companies to produce the comedy "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy," from writer-directors Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, both veterans of "Late Show with David Letterman."
